나는 1994년 처음으로 음악회에서 아코디언 연주를 들은 후 그 소리에 매료되어 아코디언을 위한 작품을 쓰기 시작했는데 “Sudden Stop I a”는 그 네 번째에 해당하는 아코디언과 오케스트라를 위한 작품이다.
아코디언은 음색에 있어서 다른 악기들과 잘 어울릴 뿐만 아니라 연주기법에서도 흥미로운 부분이 많다. 특히, Bellow shake는 현악기에 있어서 up-and-down bow와 유사하지만 아코디언만의 독특한 음색과 리듬을 만들어 낼 수 있으며 오른손에서 왼손으로, 혹은 그 반대로의 음의 이동, 그리고 오른손과 왼손이 다른 음색으로 유니즌을 연주할 수 있다는 점이 흥미롭다.
이 작품은 크게 9개의 부분으로 이루어져 있는데 아코디언의 솔로부분으로 인해 3부분으로 인식될 수도 있다. 9개의 부분은 제목에서 보듯이 대부분 갑작스럽게 중단되는데 이 때 앞의 상황에 따라 각기 다른 긴장을 갖는 휴지부를 보여준다. 휴지부 다음에는 새로운 요소가 나타나기도 하지만 앞에 사용되었던 요소로 다시 시작하여 다른 음악현상으로 발전하기도 하는데 이를 통해 곡 전체의 유기적인 연결성 및 통일성이 주어진다. 아코디언의 솔로부분에서는 위에서 언급한 아코디언의 특징적인 기법들을 중심으로 다양한 음색의 변화를 보여주려 하였다.
작품해설(영문)
I began writing pieces for the accordion after I first heard it played at a concert in 1994, and was very fascinated by its sound. A piece for the accordion and the orchestra, “Sudden Stop I a” is my 4th piece written for the accordion.
The accordion’s sound blends well with other instruments in the orchestra, but also it has many interesting playing techniques. One of the examples might be in Bellow Shake technique. This effect is similar to up-and-down bow in strings but it also makes very distinctive timbre and rhythm. It is also interesting to hear the movement of notes from one hand to the other. When it is played in unison, the sound output can be different.
This work consists of nine sections. Because of the accordion’s solo parts, it may appear as being three sections rather than nine. Most of nine sections stop abruptly as is indicated from the title. These sudden stops create a pause, and each pause build up with different tension depending on what happened in previous episodes. After a pause, sometimes a new element emerges, while other times it is previously used elements which develop into a different musical phenomenon. Through these elements, the piece provides the organic connectivity and unity of the integral work. In the accordion’s solo sections, I tried to show various changes in tones through characteristic techniques of the accordion.
