작품해설

이 작품은 2011년 런던 필하모닉 오케스트라의 위촉으로 작곡된 작품으로써, 2011년 6월 8일, 런던필하모닉 오케스트라의 연주로 초연되었고 같은해 10월 1일 BBC 3 라디오에서 그 실황이 방송되었다.

이 작품을 의뢰받았을 때, 주제는 게임 이었다. 나는 당시에 새로운, 여태껏 써보지 않았던 스타일, 구조나 소리를 만드는 것에 대해 연구 중이었는데 그때 우연히 흥미로운 구조의 긴 판화작품을 보게 되었다. 그것은 우연히 흥미로운 구조의 긴 판화작품을 보게 되었다. 그것은 Metamorphosis라 불리오는, 현실세계에서는 불가능한 도형이나 구조를 주로 다루는 화가 Escher 의 작품이었다.

작품은 Metamorphosis라는 흑백의 영어단어로 시작된다. 그 영어단어는 서서히 도형으로 압축되고, 사각형의 도형은 다시 육각형인 듯 변하며 이구아나가 서로 꼬리를 무는 형상으로 변화한다. 이런 식으로 화가는 도형에서 사물을, 사물에서 도형의 예측 불가능한 변화를 흥미롭게 보여주며 15번의 탈바꿈을 거쳐 다시 시작된영어단어로 돌아온다. 이 작품이 구조적으로 특히 흥미로웠던 이유는 긴장요소를 배치한 포인트가 음악에서와 매우 유사하다는 것이었다.

청중에게 클래식적인 구조대신 현대적으로 발전된, 새로운, 들리는 구조를 어ᄄᅠᇂ게 보여줄 수 있을 것인가. 이것이 이 작품의 가장 중요한 목표였다.

작품해설(영문)

I have been interested in works with unusual structures. One day, as I scrutinized the sur-real art piece, M. C, Escher's 'Metamorpho-se', I thought about how the structural ideas could be set to music.

The painting is divided into fifteen sections. Each section connects to another. At the begin-ning, there is only the word 'Metamorphose' on a striped background. The then word appears continuously both vertically and horizon-tally. Then it transforms into abstract shapes of black and white squares. This pattern dis-solves, reverts back into various shapes and color is introduced. Interstingly, this occurs a third of the way through the painting - we can see the artist pause with a 'little climax'.

The shapes progress from hexagons and hon-eycomb to bees, fish and birds, then cubes. Next we see an entire scene: houses, a beach, the sea, then a lighthouse. The sea and lighthouse transform into a chessboard and chess pieces. Then, finally, the quadrangle chessboard shapes returns to the original scene, 'Metamorphose'.

My intention is to guide the audience throught the obscure and subsequently clarified musi-cal gestures.
