작품해설

‘피아노와 오케스트라를 위한 협주곡 만트라(念)(Concerto for Piano and Orchestra ‘Mantra’)는 금언, 노래, 송가의 뜻을 가지고 있는 산스크리트어로 성스러운 음절, 말, 시구로 구성되어 있어, 이 주문(呪文)은 영적인 힘을 가지고 있는 음체(音體, Klangkörper)라고 합니다. 이 음체의 주문은 반복하여 낭송하므로 명상호흡과 결합되어 평안과 집중력을 키울 수 있도록 호흡과 호흡을 추구하는 명상입니다. 이러한 ‘Mantra’ 의 어원에 따라 피아노 협주곡에서는 음체(音體)를 발견 창작하여
이것을 반복변화기법을 활용하여 작곡한 것이다. 음체 ‘옹헤야’를 반복하여 수확의 기쁨을 노래한 것도 ‘만트라’라고 할 수 있다. 한국의 옹헤야 장단인 ‘단모리 장단’이 얼마나 신명나고 흥겨운 것인 지 이 장단을 활용하여 작곡한다는 것이 한국 작곡가의 기쁨이다. 피아노 협주곡 만트라(念)는 2013 년 독일 Bonn 국제피아노 콩쿠르에서 여성 최초로 1등 입상한 안수정(ANN Soo-Jung)씨를 위해서 작곡, 기증한 곡입니다. 그는 동 콩쿠르 Semifinale에서 살아있는 작곡가의 작품을 연주해야 하는데, 저의 피아노 곡 ‘Fantasias’를 초연하여 가장 많은 박수갈채를 받고 1등하였습니다. 그리고 1등수상 자에게 주어지는 독주회에서 저의 ‘16아리랑 변주곡’(Beethoven Sonata Op. 111, Chopin Sonata 3 등)을 Bonn Beethoven Haus등에서 연주하여 최고의 찬사를 받았습니다.

작품해설(영문)

‘Mantra’ is Sanskrit for “golden saying” and “song”, consisting of sacred syllables, words and poetic phrases, often called Klangkörper, imbued with spiritual power. Klangkörper are to be repeatedly recited, helping the listener to meditate in a way that builds peace and concentration within oneself. Based on the etymology of mantra, Klangkörper within this Concerto for Piano and Orchestra are played repeatedly and recited in creative and unique ways. As a Korean composer, it is my privilege and honor to be inspired by and be able to utilize “Danmori,” exciting and exhilarating rhythmic patterns from Korean traditional music, and also the rhythmic pattern incorporated in “Ongheya.”

Mantra is dedicated to Soo-jung Ann, who became the first ever female first prize winner at the International Telekom Beethoven Competition Bonn 2013. In the semifinal round of the competition, she was to perform a piece by a living composer and premiered my work Fantasias, proceeding to the next round as the grand prize winner. She also per- formed my work, 16 Variations on Arirang for the recital given by the grand prize winner and held at places such as the Bonn Beethoven Haus.
