이 작품은 강원도 전통 의식으로 치러진 조부의 장례로부터 영향을 받았다. 호상이었던 총 4일의 장례식은 슬픔과 아픔이 현장이 아니라 축제 의식 그 자체였다. 쉬지 않고 치러지는 제사를 통해 뿜어내는 탄식과 곡소리는 차라리 인간의 본성에로부터의 노래였다. 선산을 향하여 가면서 불려 졌던 노래, 그리고 춤과 노래로 구성된 회다지기로 마무리 할 때까지 그 모든 상황은 드라마틱하게 이루어 졌다. 이러한 광경은 당시 어렸던 나의 눈엔 한편의 축제요 제전이었다. 빠름-느림-빠름의 3부분 구성을 가진 Ritual Seasons는 찬란했던 망인의 삶을 축하하는 첫 번째 부분과 떠나가는 영혼의 아쉬움이 바이올린 협주곡 형태로 나타내는 두 번째 부분, 그리고 다시 만날 것을 기억하는 마지막 부분으로 이루어진다.

This piece was inspired by the memory of my grandfather's funeral. In keeping with the Korean tradition of 'Ho-sang," the Funeral was a dramatic experience for everyone involved, and full of festive and delightful moments. The most dramatic moment in the ceremony was the burial of the corpse. "Ritual Seasons" consists of three sections (fast-slow-fast) prefaced by a short introduction. The first section portrays a dialogue between the soul and the mourners, having concerto grosso style with string quartet and orchestra. The second section takes a style of violin concerto with slow tempo. The thematic mixtures and transformations in the final section represent the anticipation of the reunification of the family.
