이 곡은 우리나라 개국신화인 단군(檀君)신화를 주제로 삼고 있다. 하늘이 열리고 단군 왕검(王儉)이 탄생한다는 의미에서 ‘개천(開天)-La Creation du Monde-이라는 제목이 붙여진 이 작품은 전체적으로네 악장으로 이루어졌다.
1악장인 ‘천상’(Le Monde Celeste)은 2004년도에 발표되었고, 2악장인 ‘지상’(Le Monde Terrestre)은 2007년도에 발표되었으며, 3악장에 해당하는 이 곡은 ‘기도’(La Priere)이다. 곰과 호랑이는 쑥과 마늘만으로 연명하며 굴속으로 들어가 백일기도를 하게 된다. 견디지 못한 호랑이는 굴속을 뛰쳐나온 반면, 잘 견뎌낸 곰은 삼칠일 만에 인간 웅녀가 된다. 단군 어머니(웅녀)의 탄생을 의미하는 내용을 담고 있는 이 곡에서, 두 그룹의 주제군인 곰과 호랑이의 주제와 마늘과 쑥의 주제가 전체를 지배한다.
작품해설(영문)
The Main subject of "The prayer" is a Dangun mythology as the birth myth of a nation. The title, The creation of the World refers to Dangun, the founding father of the Korean nation and consists of four movements. The first movement, The World of Heaven was performed in 2004, where as the second movement, The world of the Heaven was performed in 2007. "The Prayer" as the third movement represents the meaning of the birth of Ungnyeo, the mother of Dangun. A bear and a tiger prayed to Hwanung that they may become human. Upon hearing their prayers, Hwanung gave them garlic and a bundle of mugwort, ordering them to eat only this sacred food and remain out ot the sun for 100 days. The tiger gave up and life the cave, but the bear remained and was transformed into a woman, Ungnyeo. Two thematic groups, the motive of bear and tiger versus garlic and mugwort, are involved throughout the piece.
