많은 작곡가들은 작품을 만들면서 그 작품에 통일성을 부여하기 위해 많은 고민들을 한다. 여러 음악적인 부분들을 어떤 관계를 만들어 배치할지 혹은 음악적 아이디어들을 작곡가만의 논리를 가지고 어떻게 제시할 지 등에 관해서 말이다. ‘Being and Becoming’에서는 이러한 고민들을 음조직의 유기성이라는 측면에서 구조적 접근을 시도하였다. 음군(Tone Cluster) 혹은 반음계적 음들의 집합은 주요한 음악적 재료로 취급되며 수직적 혹은 수평적인 형태로 변형되어 나타난다. 이 작품에서 던지는 음악적 질문은 음소재의 정체성을 찾아가는 여정 속에서 이해될 수 있으며 처음에 흩어졌던 소리의 변형들은 결말에 도달해서 12반음으로 구성된 화음으로 시작하여 결국에는 하나의 음(A음)으로 귀결하며 곡을 마치게 된다.
작품해설(영문)
Many composers give serious thoughts on how to make a piece with a unity, how to organize sections with a relationship, and how to present ideas with their own logic. This is the one of results which I attempted to demonstrate the organically processed idea. Tone cluster or sets of chromatic scale is the main tonal material of the music. It appears and is transformed in horizontal and/or vertical form throughout the piece. Each section has this organic idea and its varied shape. The music shows the journey of finding its identity of the main idea. At the end of the work, the cluster is finally resolved into the one note.
