홀로 피고 지는 들꽃이 만개한 언덕이 하늘과 닿아있는 풍경에 설레었던 기억을 소리로 내어 놓는데, 매우 적합하다고 여겨서 대금과 관현악 편성의 작품을 쓰게 되었다. 작품의 내용은 “황량한 겨울 언덕에 / 봄기운이 스며들고 / 들꽃이 하나 둘씩 움터 / 언덕에 색깔을 입히고 / 꽃을 찾아 날아온 나비들의 유희 / 해지는 언덕의 언덕“
을 그리 두텁지 않은 질감의 그림처럼 꼭 필요한 만큼의 가능한 한 적은 소리를 사용하여 표현했다. 6음으로 된 주제와 그 역진행인 두 선율이 전곡에 걸쳐 다양한 방법으로 제시되며, 화음도 그 선율 안에 있는 음정의 조합으로 되어있다. 대금의 음량과 음색의 특징을 충분히 고려하여 서양관현악의 울림과 조화를 이룰 수 있고, 국악이나 서양음악에서 들을 때와는 색다른 맛과 멋을 드러낼 수 있기를 바란다. 관현악은 2관 편성으로 되어있으며, 타악기와 하프의 역할이 두드러지는 부분들이 있다.
이 곡에는 서양음악의 전통적 표현방식에 기초를 두고, 지나치게 강요하는 듯한 강한 표현 보다는 비교적 간결하면서도 어떤 느낌을 일으키는 계기가 되는 소리를 제시는 듯한 표현이 우월하게 나타난다. 즉 지나친 반복이나 일관된 주입보다는, 과하거나 급작스럽지 않은 변화가 이어진다. 그러한 시간 동안, 연주자는 작곡가 요청에 성심껏 응답하고, 청중은 작곡가의 이야기에 차츰 더 귀 기울이게 되며, 작곡가는 자신 안의 소리가 꺼내어지고 공유되는 것에 감동하고 감사할 수 있기를 바라며...
작품해설(영문)
This work embodies my memory of a hill, filled with fully bloomed wild flowers, touching the sky. My memory has metamorphosed into beautiful sounds played by a daegeum and orchestra.
This composition expresses with bare minimal sounds, as if painting textures with light. “On a desolate hill in winter / The spirit of spring permeates / Wildflowers sprouting one by one / Painting the hill with colors / Butterflies dance to the flowers / Hill of hills in sunset”
The main theme consists of 6 notes and corresponding retrograde and inversion melodies. Variations on the main theme are presented throughout this work, creating harmonies through combinations of intervals. By considering the range, volume and timber of the daegeum, it complements the Western orchestra’s resonant sounds, with the intent to bring out unique flavors and flares new to both traditional Korean and Western styles of music. The orchestration includes prominent percussion and harp sections.
Based on the western musical tradition, this work evokes certain emotions through simplistic sounds, rather than overly complex sounds with powerful expression. Therefore, instead of excessive repetitions or insistent saturations, this work remains consistent without sudden or unnecessary changes. If, during this process, the performers can wholeheartedly express to the composer’s directions and draw the audience in, I will be grateful to have had the chance to share sounds drawn from within my soul.
