‘엔탈피’란 열역학 함수의 일종으로 어떤 물질이 일정한 압력 하에서 생성되는 동안, 그 물질 속에 축적된 열함량, 즉 에너지를 의지한다. 이 작품에서는 주제 음렬을 통해 파생되는 모든 종류의 분자결합을 이끌어내는 음악적 에너지의 의미로 사용되었다. 이 작품에서 엔탈피는 음 하나하나를 결합시켜 다양한 구조를 만드는가 하면 만들어진 구조를 분해시켜 자유로운 분자의 움직임을 구성하는 일종의 전우주적 절대진리를 의미한다.
호모리드믹한 총주는 결합구조를, 자유롭게 서로 대응하는 대위구조는 분해된 분자들의 움직임을 나타낸다. 기존의 목관 5중주에서 약간 무겁고 풍부한 사운드의 호른을 빼고 날카롭고 반응속도가 빠른 4개의 순수 목관악기만 사용했고 짧은 서주를 거쳐 분해와 결합이 반복되는 에피소드가 이어져 결정적인 분자합성의 클라이막스에 도달하는 형식으로 이루어져 있다.

Enthalpy is a measurement of energy in a thermodynamic system. It is the total heat accumulated in a substance while the substance is being generated under pressure. In this piece, enthalpy is used to represent musical energy that brings together all types of molecules derived from the thematic series. Enthalpy works to combine different notes and to create diverse structures, while also breaking down existing structures into freely moving molecules - a universal absolute truth. Homorhythmic tutti stands for the combined structure, and freely responding counterpoints symbolize the movements of the broken down molecules. The horn was excluded from the original woodwind quintet to leave only the four woodwind instruments that create sharper sounds more responsively. A short overture is followed by a series of episodes that repetitively combine and break down molecules and by the climax of the ultimate molecular complexation.
