다른 역사와 배경을 가진 두 악기가 한 공간에서 또 다른 하나를 만들어낸다. 대금과 플루트를 위한 이중 협주곡 ‘공생’, 이 작업은 서로 다른 두 악기의 소리가 어느 지점에서 어떤 방식으로 만나야 할지를 고민한 결과다.
취구에 불어 넣는 바람의 세기를 통해 음정과 음량을 조절하여 소리를 내는 방법과 가로로 부는 관악기라는 점에서는 유사하지만, 대나무와 금속제라는 재질상의 차이와 관의 길이, 지공과 더불어 연주 자세와 소리 내는 법의 미묘한 차이, 그리고 무엇보다 ‘청(淸)’이라는 대금 고유의 떨림은 이 곡에서 음색의 대비요소로 사용되었다.
화려한 선을 가진 두 악기가 오케스트라의 지속적인 음에서 출발하여 점층 확장되어 가는 도구로 활용․투영되어 한층 더 화려하고 힘을 더한 색채가 된다. 곡 전반적으로 대금과 플루트는 기교적 빠른 패시지가 요구되는 고 난이도의 연주를 필요로 하며, 오케스트라 사이에서 자신의 특성을 드러내면서도 자연스럽게 어우러지는 것을 목표로 하였다.
작품해설(영문)
These two musical instruments have very different histories, and they create something new when played together. ‘Symbiosis,’ a double concerto for the flute and daegeum, is a result of hard thinking about how the sounds of two different instruments should meet and at which points.
They are similar in that both are wind instruments transversely played by blowing a stream of air over the embouchure to produce sounds and adjust the volume and keys. They are different in that one is made of bamboo and the other of metal, are of different dimensions in every respect, require different playing postures, and produce sounds differently. Most importantly of all, there is the tremor called ‘cheong’ that is unique to the daegeum. ‘Cheong’ is often used in this piece to emphasize a contrasting tone.
The two instruments, both of which have linear glamour, start from the continuous tone of the orchestra and gradually expand to assume a more impressive and powerful coloration. Throughout the score, playing of the flute and daegeum requires the utmost virtuosity, particularly during the fast-paced passages. The goal is for them to have a unique presence in the orchestra and still remain in harmony.
