5인의 타악기 주자를 포함하는 3관 편성의 관현악곡인 “MetaOrchestra"는 서양음악의 전통적인 변주곡 형식의 틀에 한국 전통 궁중음악의 하나인 수제천의 질서를 투영시킨 작품이다. 음악적 소재들의 반복은 다채로운 오케스트레이션에 의해 유지되는 동시에 복합적인 변형 기법들과 갑작스러운 두 번의 에피소드 섹션, 은폐된 주제요소의 간헐적 배치 및 타악기의 예외저인 사용 등에 의해 해체되며 역위 시킨 주제선율의 재현으로 마무리된다. 각 변주들이 어떻게 소재들을 반복하고, 어떤 종류의 반복이 그 음악적 내용 안에서 공존하며 정해진 시간의 차원에 궁극적으로 귀결하는지를 직관적 관조를 통해 이끌어 냈다. 첫 부분이 땅을 열어 소리가 설 마당을 마련했다면 끝 부분은 시간성을 두고 유기적 형태로 변형되며 반복되어온 음악이 하늘로 서서히 흡수되어 승화됨을 표현한다.
작품해설(영문)
In "MetaOrchestra", I experiment with the idea of taking certain conventions from both Eastern and Western music and transforming them. Repetition of musical material can be found historically throughout both cultures. Therefore, I adapted a theme and variations structure to create a form that mirrors the spiritual ideal of the piece. The theme and variations form is derived from the adjusted order of ancient Korean court music Sujechon in which it was important to organize all the elements perfectly,, to avoid damaging the processes of the Universe. Each variation is carefully placed to reflect the natural and logical progress of the music. In theory, it should be able to begin and end at any point, as it does in Sujechon, but since the order of the variations is important too. I hinted at this by composing the coda and final variation using retrograded materials from the theme.
