“流”란 흐름을 뜻한다. 비근한 예를 들자면 물의 흐름이 있을 것이다. 그 흐름의 안은 상당히 복잡하고 미묘하다. 우선 중간층은 속도가 완만하며 굴곡이 적다. 하지만 상층과 하층은 중간층에 비해 속도가 빠르며 굴곡선 또한 가파르게 진행된다. 그 흐름의 층을 오선보와 같은 5개의 층으로 구분시켜 보았다.
또한, 이 곡은 음양오행의 원리를 적용하여 음(陰)과 양(陽)이 서로 대립함으로써 무궁한 변화가 일어나도록 하였으며 악기 상호간의 견제, 보완을 통하여 균형과 조화를 이루도록 하였다.
이렇듯 같은 물질 간 에도 서로 다른 성질의 다양한 흐름과 파동이 일어나 상호 대립하지만, 그것은 흐름의 조화를 유지하기위해 생겨나는 것으로 본다.
결국, 이러한 파동 (빠른 파동층과 완만한 파동층과의 사이)은 서로가 출동하고 대립·융화되어 그 흐름이 지속된다.
작품해설(영문)
“流”(Ryu) means flow, such as that of a stream. The profile of a stream is very complicated and delicate. First, its middle layers run slow and steady, but the surface and bottom layers flow faster and roll swiftly. I have divided these layers into five flows, like the musical staff. Furthermore, by applying the principle of yin and yang, the two oppositional elements, I have brought various changes to this song and balanced and harmonized it by using both the complementary and differential sounds of each musical instrument.
Conflicts occur even within the same substance because the different flows and waves, but I think it also happens in order to maintain the harmony of the flows. After all, the colliding, splitting, and mixing of each layer of the stream(between the fast moving and steady layers) drive the flow.
