이 작품은 조선시대의 문인화가 이인상(1710-1769)의 그림, “와운(渦雲)”, 소용돌이 구름을 주제로 작곡되었다. 이 그림은 마치 거세게 휘몰아치는 격랑 같은 먹구름 모습을 보여준다. 이인상은 그림에 이렇게 적었다. ‘시를 생각했는데 술 취해 쓰려다 구름뭉치가 되었소. 이 모양이 되었으니 그저 웃음거리외다’ 하나 이는 화가의 숨겨진 속내를 드러낸 것이라 한다. 이 작품의 산조아쟁은 산조 연주를 위한 것이 아닌 악기의 폭넓은 농현과 강렬하며 애절한 가락으로 그림에 내포된 비장한 아름다움을 표현하기 위해 사용되었다. 작품의 전개는 화가의 내면세계를 시각적 장면묘사로 풀어간다. 명문귀족 출신이나 서얼이라는 신분적 한계에 부딪힌 관직생활에 대한 좌절과 한탄의 모습, 자신의 질병과 가족을 잃은 아픔에 슬픔을 머금고 있는 모습, 발걸음을 재촉하며 장마빗속에서 가슴의 울혈을 그림으로 표출하는 모습, 자신의 운명을 받아들이며 단호히 살아가는 비장한 모습, 마음을 다잡고 슬픔을 삼키는 모습. 이 작품은 회화의 수묵기법 안에서 절제된 미를 추구하며 전통악기색채와 현대적 음악구조와의 접목을 시도한 작품이다.
작품해설(영문)
The inspiration for this concerto was the painting “A Whirlpool Black Cloud” by In-Sang Lee (1710-1760), a literary ink wash painter. The SanjoAjaeng used in this concerto differs from the standard ajaeng, which is is not used for traditional Korean Sanjo, since its characteristics include a strong and wide Nonghyeon (string vibrato), a deep thick tone dolor, and a sorrowful melody to express Korean spirituality. The painter himself said, “I wanted to write poetry, but it became clouds under the influence of alcohol; this is somewhat a satirical joke. The furious black clouds reveal the painter’s subconscious and reflects the ups and downs of his dark days. In-Sang Lee, a virtuous person, was tired of political corruption, particularly since his wife and children had passed away early in life. Based on his hapless fate, this works evolves with various descriptions of several visual scenes, which are the “tears in his eyes, longing for his departed family,” “him painting figures in the rain,” the “anxieties occupying his mind,” and “keeping on living decisively.” This work experiments with new expressive sonorities and a unique formal design, synthesizing aspects of traditional Korean and contemporary musical idioms.
