이 곡은 University of California, San Diego 의 설치 미술품중의 하나인 나무 series중에서 중앙도서관 앞에 있는 “침묵의 나무” 에서 감명받은 곡이다, 모든 부분이 강철로 만들어져 있는 이 나무는 미국 내에서도 가장 현대적인 건축물중의 하나인 이 학교의 중앙도서관 건물을 짓기 위해 베어진 수많은 유칼립투스 나무를 통한 계속적인 자연환경의 파괴 상징한다. 이 곡에서 강철과 나무의 서로 다른 질감과 이미지, 나무의 기본구조와 줄기들의 다양한 모습 등을 묘사하기 위해 기본 화성을 중심으로 선적인 움직임의 세분화와 이질적인 동적인 부분들의 연결로 이루어진다.

Steel tree is one movement orchestral piece inspired by the outdoor installation sculptural work “silence tree” at the University of California, San Diego. The tree made by steel only symbolizes the continual loss of natural environment at UCSD by salvaging several eucalyptus trees from a grove razed to make way for the most modernized building in the US, the Central Library. In this piece, delicate voice leadings and some dynamic movements are mixed to depict various features of stems of tree and the different textural image of steel and wood.
