1996년 1월 초, 허영호씨의 南極征服 기사가 실렸다. 그가 들고 있는 작은 태극기를 작품 구상의 素材로 삼았으며, 태극기가 갖는 元來의 다섯 가지 의미- 平和, 單一, 創造, 光明, 無窮- 와 연관시켜 曲 전체에 표현하였다. 궁극적으로, 세계로 향한 태극기의 禮讚이다. 이 곡은 다섯 개의 심벌로 구성되어 있는 태극기의 構造에 基礎하여 다섯 악장으로 구성되었으며, 악장별로 탐험대의 登頂過程을 태극기가 갖는 의미와 연관시켰다.
【1악장】출발지인 베이스캠프를 묘사한다. 自然과 人間의 調和를 나타낸다.
【2악장】힘찬 출발과 행군의 旅程을 다룬다. 대원간의 단결을 암시하며 호모포니 구조로 전개.
【3악장】創造를 위한 苦惱를 그린다. 대원과 가족 간의 內적인 감정을 표현한다.
【4악장】頂上正服, 光明, 極地에 다다른 클라이맥스를 표현한다.
【5악장】成就에 대한 無窮을 기원하는 “팡파레(fanfare)” 악장이다. 탐험과정을 回想 하며,“국기에 대한 맹세”의 낭독 운율에 따른 리듬을 적용시켜 그 絶頂을 이룬다.
작품해설(영문)
In January 1996, South Korean mountain climbers conquered the South Pole. Newspapers carried a picture taken at the journey’s end. I felt a strong emotion when I saw the climbers holding a tiny Korean flag (Taegukki) in the blurry picture. My musical idea originates from this emotion. “Rally’ round the Flag” follows the successful progress of the expedition. Moreover, I associated this piece with the meaning of the Korean flag. Therefore, “Rally’ round the Flag “consists of five movements to symbolize the five basic meanings of the Korean flag: peace, unity, creation, hope and eternity. However, even if nationalities may differ, every person in the world respects and keeps their national flag close to their hearts. “Rally’ round the Flag” will express this personal and unique admiration that each of us carry for our national flag.
