우리 인간은 원하지 않지만 때때로 질병이나 재난에 시달리고 고통받는다. 그 때는 자신만이 겪고 있는 고통으로 인해 외부 세계와 단절된 아프고 고립된 심적 상태를 경험한다. 이 곡은 특히 한센병으로 인해 가족과 사회로부터 단절되어 외롭게 살아가는, 또 살아가야 했던 영혼들을 위해 작곡된 곡으로서 F. Schubert의 연 가곡집 <겨울나그네>에 포함되어 있는 차가우면서도 너무나 따듯한 선율의 단편들이 인용되어 변용되고 있다. 2011년 말, (사)한국여성작곡가회 기획 연주회 한센인과 함께하는 “아름다운 동행”의 전주곡으로 쓰였다.
작품해설(영문)
We sometimes suffer from disease and disaster. The suffering and pain make us feel isolated and secluded from the outside world. This piece was composed for those who have been forced to live in isolation, cut off from their friends and family, due to leprosy. The composer extracted the cold yet warm fragmentary melodies from Winterreise composed by Schubert and transformed them into variations. It was performed as the prelude in a concert staged for leprosy patients (Beautiful Companions) in late 2011 by the Korean Society of Women Composers.
