농현 기법의 움직임적인 이미지를 형상화한 작품이다. 한국 전통음악의 연주기법으로서 농현이란 여러 가지 전문적인 용어로 말할 수 있지만, 간략한 이미지를 설명하자면 음을 흔들어 물결과 같은 파동을 얻는 것이라 할 수 있다. 서양음악의 Vibration의 느낌과 비슷하지만, 같지는 않다.
농현의 움직임을 확대경으로 본다고 상상한다면, 수많은 Mikroton(미분음)이 움직이는 과정을 볼 수 있을 것이다. 나는 이러한 움직임의 여러 가지 패러미터를 가지고 작곡을 하였다. 서로 각각 악기들이 같은 방향의 움직임, 정반대(Inversion) 방향의 움직임, 자유스러운 방향의 움직임으로 3가지의 움직임이있다. 본래 음악은 멜로디가 있어야 한다. 하지만, 이러한 움직임은 멜로디가 없다. 다만 한국어로는 음악적인 운동성이 있는 선, 영어로는 Musical Moving Line 혹은 Musical Moving Frame 이라 말할 수 있지 않을까 생각된다. 이러한 이유가 농현이 Vibration과 다른 것이다.
나는 작품 ‘상념 (像念)’에서 Melody가 없이 Musical Moving Line이 시간적 흐름 안에서 끊임없이 변화하는 음색의 운동성을 형상화한 이미지로 나타내고자 하였다.
작품해설(영문)
This piece aims to bring to life the concept of vitality through nonghyeon. Nonghyeon is, in short, a technique that creates waves of sound by vibrating strings. It is similar to vibrato but not identical. If the acoustic movements created through nonghyeon could be viewed under a microscope, they would comprise a multitude of mikrotons. This piece was composed based on this imagining and the different parameters of such movements. Various instruments sometimes move towards the same direction, sometimes move in opposite directions, and sometimes move freely in unexpected directions. Music is typically based on melodies. However, these movements are without melodies. They may be defined more specifically as "moving musical lines" or "moving musical frames". This is why nonghyeon stands apart from vibrato. "In Thought" for String Quartet seeks to embody the movements of constantly changing tone colors, or "moving musical frames", that lack melodies within the framework of flowing time.
