작품해설
프랑스의 작가이자 비행기 조종사였던 생택쥐페리(Antoine Marie Roger De Saint Exupery)가 1931년에 쓴 동명 소설 <야간비행(Vol de nuit, Night Flight)>을 읽는 후 얻은 영감을 바탕으로 쓴 곡이다. 소설은 자신의 소임에 따라 때로는 위험한 항로를 떠나야 하는 조종사들의 초인적 의지와 작가 자신의 경험을 바탕으로 한 야간 항해의 생생한 묘사로 가득하다. 위험한 야간 비행에서 폭풍우에 휩싸여 방향을 잃은 비행에 얼마 남지 않은 연료를 가지고 생사가 걸린 항해를 하는 부분에서 작가는 소설의 가장 극적인 장면을 연출한다. 사방이 바다라는 것만 확인해 준 마지막 조명탄을 끝으로 더 이상 희망은 없다고 생각하는 순간, 폭풍우가 몰아치는 구름 사이로 보이는 별, 그 이상한 힘에 이끌려 주인공 파비앵은 구름을 뚫고 올라간다. 구름 위에서 그는 곧 있을 죽음도 순간 잊게 만드는 이상한 세계에 들어간다. 보름달과 별자리들에 의해 빛나는 파도와 같이 찬란한 구름, 완전한 평온, 입가에 절로 깃드는 미소, 그러나 다시는 나올 수 없는 보물의 방, 그 순간 파비앵은 이렇게 생각한다. “정말 아름답군.”

This piece is inspired by Night Flight written by French author and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery in 1931. This novel is based on the author's own experiences and is full of detailed descriptions about night flights that can sometimes be risky and the agony of pilots. The hero of the novel, Fabien, risks flying at night despite the possibility of a storm and is endangered as the situation gets worse and his aircraft begins running out of fuel. The last illuminating bomb shows that he is about to crash into the ocean and deprives him of any hope. At that moment, a star is seen in between the storm clouds. Fabien climbs through the clouds, drawn by the star's mysterious power, and discovers a surreal world above the clouds. It is a world of complete tranquility floating on the waves of clouds that glitter under the full moon and stars. His face is lit by a joyful smile, and he is trapped in that space. Fabien thinks, "How beautiful this is!"
