장욱진 화가의 작품, “나무와 새”(1957)에서 영감을 받아 곡을 구상하게 되었다. 그림에서는 제목이 말해주듯 나무와 새가 캔버스의 대부분을 차지하고 있다. 새 위에 커다란 나무가 있고, 이 나무 위에 여러 개의 작은 집과 해와 달이 있으며, 나무에서 이를 바라보는 아이의 시선을 표현하고 있다. 나는 이 작품에서 아주 작은 부분을 차지하지만, 그림의 한 부분의 표현에 집중하였다. 해와 달이 한 시간과 공간에 존재하지만 우리가 한꺼번에 볼 수 없다는 사실을 동화적으로 표현한 것이 흥미로웠다. 오보에와 타악기를 위한 이 곡에서는 공존하는 것들의 조화와 충돌, 상생을 음악으로 들려주고자 한다.
작품해설(영문)
This piece is inspired by Tree and Bird (1957) painted by Chang Ucchin - a preeminent Korean painter. As suggested by its title, the painting is predominated by a tree and bird. A massive tree is drawn atop a bird, which is topped by several little houses, the sun, and the moon. A child is looking at the houses and the sky on the tree. I focused on a small yet seemingly siginificant part of this painting. The painter seemed to convey the message that, although the sun and the moon exist in the same place at the same time, they are never revealed to the human eye together through the fairy-tale world of imagination. This piece aims to embody harmony, conflict, and the coexistence of different beings.
