작품해설

동질의 악기 두 대에 의해 서로 대화식으로 펼치고 이어져가는 작은 곡들로 이루어져 있으며, 이들의 대화는 그때마다 서로 같은 이야기 (같은 모티브)를 주고받거나 한쪽이 이야기를 할 때 다른 한쪽이 도와주는 식으로 되어 있다.
곡 전체는 2성부 대위법에 의한 인벤션처럼 구성되어 있어 같은 생각을 가지고 있는 두 사람이 대화를 풀어나가는 것처럼 되어 있고, 곡의 구조에 있어서는, 첫 곡과 마지막 곡 그리고 중간 곡 (다섯 번째) 은 고음으로 끝나게 되고 이들을 기점으로 그사이 곡들은 대부분 최저음 영역에서 끝나게 되어 있다.
또한 각 곡들은 화가가 그때그때 스케치하듯 한 번 내지 두 번의 큰 단위의 숨으로 끝나고 있다.

플륫을 위한 2성 대위법 연습이라고 해도 좋을 만큼 두 성부는 어느 하나에 치중함이 없이 동등하며 10개의 곡 모두가 대위법적으로 처리되며 전개되어 있다. 10개의 곡 모두는 몇 개의 12음렬과 여기에서 파생된 음렬들을 이용한 것이다. 그러나 순수한 12음 기법에 의한 것은 아니며 단지 12음의 시간적 순서에 의한 등장을 이용해 음조의 일관성을 유지하고 있을 뿐 곡 전체는 조성적 진행에 의한 아주 작은 조각들의 연결로 되어 있다. 이를 돕기 위해 이웃하는 음들의 사이를 반음계로 잠시 메우기도 하고 반복 음형을 사용해 그때그때 특정 음조를 강조하기도 하였다. 단순한 리듬꼴도 여기에 큰 도움을 주고 있다.

작품해설(영문)

The ten sketches exchange tunes as if engaging in a conversation with one another based on two flutes. Their conversations develop by focusing on one common story (motif) or with one sketch providing support for another. The entire collection is an invention based on the two-part counterpoint and sounds like a dialogue between the two. The first piece, last piece, and fifth piece end with a high-pitched tone, and the remaining pieces mostly end in the lowest register. Each piece is completed by a breath that resembles a bold brush stroke of a painter (printed copy, p. 2).


This collection of ten sketches can be said to be a study of two-part counterpoint for flutes as it places a focus on both parts in an equal manner. All ten sketches progress based on the counterpoint method and take advantage of several 12-tone series and series deviated from them. However, the consistency in the pitch is maintained only through the chronological appearance of the twelve tones. The ten sketches are conncected with tiny fragments by tonal progression. The sound is enriched by filling intervals between neighboring notes with chromaticism and by emphasizing a certain pitch through the repetition of tonal patterns.
