‘세한도’는 날씨가 추워져도 푸르름을 잃지 않는 소나무처럼 세상이 험하고 어려워도 우정을 저버리지 않는 돈독한 벗을 이야기하는 추사 김정희가 그린 생애 최고의 명작이다. 아쟁협주곡 ‘세한, 그 푸르름’은 세한도에 깃든 추사의 정신세계와 그의 따뜻한 마음을 음악적으로 조명했다. 독주악기, 산조 아쟁은 품격 있는 학문의 높은 경지를 묘사한 추사에 비유되었으며, 관현악 파트는 혹한에도 시들지 않고 푸르름을 유지하는 제사 이상적의 절개가 묘사된 소나무에 비유됐다.

Background of composition
The following is an inspiration from the emotion and spirit of the painting ‘Sehando’ by Chusa Jeonghee Kim: pine trees do not lose their greenness even in the depths of winter. No matter how rough and difficult life is, friendship never changes. His gratitude towards friendship and his invisible but magnificent dignity as a great scholar are reflected in the music.
Interpretation of the work
The ‘Sehando’ painted by Chusa Jeonghee Kim, is a great masterpiece which depicts true friendship that—like the pine tree which never loses its greenness in winter— doesn’t fade even in difficult and tough times. The seven-stringed instrument concerto, ‘The Greeness in Winter’ interpreted through the music of Chusa’s spiritual world and his warmth melted in the Sehando. The Ajaeng solo is likened to Chusa, who achieved a grand academic tone, and the orchestral parts are likened to pine trees, which retain their greenness in the intense cold, in the manner of Chusa’s apprentice Sangjeok Lee.
