작곡배경
‘한가람의 숨’은 한강의 어원인 ‘한가람’과 들이마시고 내쉬는 기운 ‘숨’을 뜻한다. 서울의 대표적인 산인 ‘관현악곡 북한산’의 후속 작품으로 세계적으로 내세워도 손색이 없는 아름다운 한강을 표현했다. 한가람(한강)은 우리 민족의 모든 아픔과 즐거움을 같이 느끼고 살아가는 생명수이다. 서울에서 태어나 서울에서 살고 있는 작곡가로서, 가장 가까이에서 늘 함께하는 자연의 소중함을 노래하고 싶었다.
작품해설
‘공’의 커다란 울림과 함께 신비스럽고 역동적인 강이 탄생한다. 가야금으로 생명이 태동되듯 시작되는 주제 선율은 박자의 변환과 함께 급격한 소용돌이를 나타내다가 어느덧 숨이 멈춰지는 듯 조용히 가다듬는다. 굿거리장단에 맞춰 어린 인생은 양금 솔로가, 젊은 인생은 대금 솔로가 그리고 늙은 인생은 진도아리랑의 아련한 피리 선율이 마음을 적신다. 강의 흐름과 인생의 흐름은 언제 어느 때 갑작스런 변화가 생기는지 알 수 없듯, 긴장과 불협의 급변하는 7박 리듬을 지나서, 복잡하고 변화무쌍한 현대를 품으며 강하고 빠르게 끝을 맺는다. 마지막에 연주자들의 숨소리는 강의 숨이자 곧 우리의 숨이며, 살고자 하는 나의 숨이다.

Background of composition
‘Breath of Hangaram’ refers to the inhalation and exhalation of the breath and the origin of the Han River, ‘Hangaram’. The music is a sequel of ‘Orchestral Music of Bukchan Mountain’ a famous landscape mountain of Seoul which captures the beauty of the Han River, and has become nothing short of a global landmark. Hangaram (the Han River) represents the life-giving water where the Korean people have shared their pain and joy. As a composer who was born and raised in Seoul, I wanted to sing about the preciousness of the natural world closest to us and always around us.
Interpretation of the work
With the huge resonance of an ‘Gong’ a mysterious and dynamic river is born. The main melody, which begins like the birth of life with the gayageum, represents a swerve with changing beats and calms down as if it stops breathing. Against the backdrop of a Gutgory rhythm, the young life is symbolized by a Yanggeum solo, the young adult life by a Daegeum solo, and the old life by a sad and emotional Piri melody of Jindo Arirang. After fast-changing, 7-beat rhythms, it ends quickly and strongly, embracing the complicated and rapidly-changing contemporary world. The breathing sound of the players at the end refers to the breath of the river, our collective breath, as well as my individual breath, encompassing all who want to be alive.
