작곡배경
충남 예산군 수덕사(修德寺)에 실존하는 전설적인 거문고에 얽힌 역사적 발자취. 고려를 거쳐 조선, 두 왕조의 격동의 세월을 견디어 온 거문고의 생명력과 공민왕의 그림 ‘천산대렵도(天山大獵圖)’를 통한 공민왕의 예술세계와 내면세계, 그리고 노국공주에 대한 애달픈 사랑이야기를 배경으로 한다.
작품해설
수덕사 거문고는 고려 공민왕이 직접 만들어 탔던 신령한 명품으로 공민왕의 충신 길재의 손을 거쳐 조선왕조의 이강(李堈) 그리고 수덕사의 만공스님에 이르기까지 약 700년간 왕가의 가보로 전해져 내려오고 있다. 작품의 내용은 “소슬바람 불어오는 수덕사 저녁”, “달빛아래 들려오는 만공스님의 위엄 있는 거문고 소리”, 공민왕 그림 “천산대렵도 I”, 공민왕의 아내 “노국공주를 향한 애달픈 사랑”, 조선왕조 운현궁의 “거센 폭풍우에 포효하는 거문고” 그리고 오랜 세월을 묵묵히 견디어 온 “거문고의 고백”, “천산대렵도 II”로 변화무쌍하게 전개된다.

Background of composition
A historical story about a legendary geomungo at Sudeok Temple in Yesan, South Chungcheong Province. The life power of the geomungo, which survived the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties, and the tumultuous times under the two kingdoms. The artistic and inner worlds are juxtaposed against a love story revolving around Princess Noguk revealed in a painting by King Gongmin, ‘Cheonsan Deryeop Do’.
Interpretation of the work
The Geomungo at Sudeok Temple, a spiritual masterpiece, was made and played by King Gongmin (1330-1374) of the Goryeo Dynasty. The instrument was handed down, through his faithful servant Gil-jae, to Lee Gang. It was an heirloom of the Dynasty, which was eventually passed down to the Buddhist priest Man-gong of the Joseon period, 700 years after the instrument’s creation.
