작곡배경
삶 그리고 죽음의 의미를 고민하며 지내던 중 퇴계 이황의 시조를 보게되었다. 그 시조는 삶과 죽음이 이분법적으로 나뉘는 것이 아니요, 삶에서 시작하여 죽음으로 끝나는 일방적 시간의 흐름 안에 매여있는 문제도 아니라는 ‘질문’ 같은 작은 깨달음을 던져주었다. 이 곡은 여기서 시작되었다. ‘고인도 날 못 보고 나도 고인 못 보네
고인을 못 봐도 예던 길 앞에 있네
예던 길 앞에 있거든 아니 예고 어떨고.’
작품해설
태어나는 순간을 알거나, 예상하고 태어나는 사람은 없다. 생은 예기치 않게 시작되고 때를 모르고 그 생을 마감하게 된다. 이 안에서 일어나는 일들을 음악으로 이야기해 보고 싶었다. 당황스러우면서도 신비한 삶의 시작, 기쁨, 서로가 주고받는 따뜻한 위로, 하지만 또한 갑자기 닥치거나 스며들어오는 어둠과 슬픔, 상실의 아픔들. 이것들을 리듬과 선율 그리고 곡의 전체 구조에 담았고 ‘삶 → 죽음 → 다시 삶!’으로 가는 이 진한 여정을 충분히 표현하기 위해선 반드시 인성이 필요하다 생각되어 여창과 혼성합창을 국악관현악에 함께 편성했다.

Background of composition
When I was thinking about the meaning of life and death, I found a sijo (poem) by Teogye Lee Hwang (attached below) which says that life and death cannot be separated into two. Nor are the two tied into a unilateral flow of time which begins from life and ends at death. This was a small discovery which posed a question at the same time. The song began from there. ‘The passed away cannot see me and neither do I see him.
I don’t see him but I am still in front of the same road that I used to walk on.
How could I not follow since I am in front of the road that I used to walk on?’
Interpretation of the work
There is no one who knows or can predict when he will be born. People are born without any plans or expectations and also die without knowing when they will do so. I wanted to talk about what happens in between. The abrupt but mysterious beginning of life, joy, and warm consolation that people collectively feel, but also the sudden darkness and sadness, loss and pain. I put all of them in the rhythm, melody, and structure of the music. From life until death, and back to life again. In order to fully express this intense journey, I really felt that the human voice was necessary, so I incorporated women and mixed vocals into the music.
감상포인트
삶도 죽음도 결국은 환대하며 살아나가야 할 우리 모두에게 “Still Life!” 그 외침이 작은 위로가 되길 바랍니다.
(For all of us who must welcome both life and death, I hope a little cry of, “Still Alive!” will serve as a mild consolation.)
