중국이나 티베트 지역의 불교 교파 중 밀교에서는 대일여래(大日如來)를 중심으로 하여 여러 부처와 보살을 배치한 그림을 가리켜 '만다라'라고 한다. 만다라는 수행자가 명상을 통해 우주의 불성과 하나 되고자 할 때 사용하는 '깨달음의 안내도'라는 의미가 있다. 도형을 사용하고, 평면적 표현이라는 점을 제외하고는 부처의 깨달음 경지를 상징화하여 표현했다는 점에서 입체적인 단(壇)과 본질적인 의미가 같다. 나는 이번 작품을 통해 ‘깨달음을 소유한 음악’이란 의미의 음악을 형상화하려 했다.
In Vajrayana Buddhism practiced in some regions of China and Tibet, Mandalas are Buddhist paintings that feature Buddhas and Bodhisattvas with Mahavairocana Buddha at the center. They are used as an aid for meditation and concentration for those who seek to become one with the ‘Buddha-nature’ in the universe, guiding them along the path to enlightenment. Although mandalas are two-dimensional and feature geometric forms, they also closely resemble Buddhist alters which also symbolize the enlightenment of Buddha. Inspired by mandalas and what they symbolize, I wanted to create a musical piece that holds enlightenment.
