현악 4중주 "골고다"

작품해설

이 곡은 1995년에 완성되어 그 해 서울음악제에서 초연되었다. 작곡자는 당시 중품으로 인한 육체적 고통을 감내하면서 인성을 타고난 그리스도와 그가 이 세상에서 당한 십자가의 고통과 죽음에 대한 생각을 많이 하게 되었다. 이런 생각에서 고통을 상징하여 곡명을 골고다라 하였다. 전 곡은 3악장으로 구성되었으며, 1악장('죽음을 맞이하는 그리스도의 기도)은 죽음을 앞둔 그리스도의 기도, 2악장('가시 면류관')은 가시관을 쓰고 피흘리는 그리스도의 고통, 3악장('죽음')은 십자가의 죽음을 상징한다. 1악장은 점과 선의 조화로, 2악장은 음렬의 소재를 점묘적으로, 3악장은 여러 소재들을 극적으로 구성하였다.

작품해설(영문)

This work is composed in 1995 and premiered at the Seoul Music Festival in the same year. The composer was suffering from the aftermath of a blood clot in the brain around that time and Christ the person, facing the death on the holy cross in his painful agonies, was the sole comfort to him. For this reason, this work was titled Golgotha implying suffering.

Each movement is subtitled respectively as follows: "Prayer of Christ" facing death, "Thorny Crown", and "Death". The first movement is characterized by smooth and liner movements which are sometimes contrasted by detached articulation in all parts. Dodecaphonic and pointilistic techniques are employed in the second movement. In the last movement, special sound effects, such as sul ponticello, harmonics, sultasto, col legno, etc., are used and partially senzamisura is used as well in an effort to bring the whole work to a dramatic end.
