피아노를 위한 “전설(傳說)”

작품해설

이 곡은 1979년 미국 Wisconsin(Superior)대학과 Minnesota(Duluth)대학교 fullbright 초청교수로 갔을 때 그 곳 피아노과 교수의 위촉으로 작곡된 곡이다. 당시에, 어린 시절의 시골 사랑방에서 듣곤 하던 옛날 평화로운 우리 조상들의 이야기들이 머리에 떠올랐다.
그래서 첫 곡을 이름하여 "옛 이야기"라 하였고, 한 가닥 우리의 리듬을 나오는 대로 다듬지 않고 써 보았으며 4도 구성의 화음과 병행법 등 근대적 기법을 사용하였다. 둘째곡은 당시 어지러운 현실을 생각한 것이고, 옛 이야기에 대비적으로 이름을 붙여 "새 이야기"라 했다. 첫 곡보다는 당시에 사용하던 현대적 어휘로 쓰였다.

작품해설(영문)

The faculty member of the University of Wisconsin, where the composer was a Fulbright Exchange Professor, commissioned this piece. The music came from the stories he heard in the playroom of his grandparents. Based on the stories, the first piece. "Old story", features some of the modern compositional techniques like, parallelism and chords by 4th, as well as the Korean folk rhythmic ideas. The second piece, "New story", came from the thoughts on the troubled reality and features advanced compositional techniques.
