이 곡은 1990년 여름 작곡자가 중풍으로 쓰러져 고통과 절망 가운데 있을 때 구약성경 '욥기'를 읽게 되었고 여기서 얻은 아이디어에 따라 작곡한 것이다. 욥은 부자였으며 행복한 사람이었다. 그런데 하루아침에 많은 자녀와 재산을 잃고 거지가 되었고 몸에 병까지 얻는 큰 불행을 당했다. 그러나 끝내는 신앙의 힘으로 이 역경을 극복하고 승화시켰다는 내용이다.
1악장은 목가, 2악장은 고통, 3악장은 고통에 대하여 친구들과 대화, 4악장은 고통의 극복과 승화 등으로 되었다. 1악장은 단순한 주제적 동기가 단음의 대선율들로 구성되었다. 2악장은 1악장의 주제적 소재가 확대되어 사용되고 이에 대하여 여러 종류의 음정들과 여러 모양의 리듬으로 구성된 단편들이 충돌한다. 3악장은 크고 작은 단편들이 대칭 형태로 조직된 대위법적 구성의 악장이다. 4악장은 앞의 모든 소재들이 함께 사용되었다.

In Summer of 1990 the composer was stricken with paralysis and had to live in pain and desperation. At that time he came to read the book of Job and found ideas for this piece. Job an happy a rich and a proud man suddenly lost all of his children one morning as well as all luxuries and hapiness that he had. He lost everything and even health. But Job overcame the hardship and made came back. The Work is in 4 movements. 1st movement-[A Pastoral Song] 2nd movement-[Distress] 3rd movement-[Dialogue] 4th movement-[Sublimation] The pitch materials in the 1st movement is based on both a simple thematic motives and a monotone counter melodies. In the 2nd movement the thematic materials of the 1st movement expand and various intervals and fragments of different types of rhythm conflict with the materials. The 3rd movement is a contrapuntal movement and small and large thematic fragments appear in mirror. In the 4th movement materials from the previous movement appear.
