" ‘가리잡이’란 많은 신(神)들 중에 필요한 신만을 가려서 모신다.“ 라는 뜻으로서 이북지방의 굿에서 쓰이는 용어이다.
창작은 무(無)에서 유(有)를 창조하는 것이라고 하는데, 사실은 작곡자 머릿속에 잠재된 가락 중에서 가려잡아져 나온 것이다. 그러고 보면 작곡은 유에서 유가 창작된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 작곡을 위촉 받고 ‘어떤 가락을 잡아 낼 것인가’를 고민하던 중에 즉흥으로 연주하는 해금의 ‘허튼타령’ 가락을 생각했다. 무속반주나 탈춤 승무 음악에 연주되는 멋스러운 허튼타령은 연주자(잡이)가 즉흥으로 연주하는 가락이다. 허튼가락은 장단을 잡혀놓고 놀아야 제 맛이 난다. 콘트라베이스가 그 역할을 해 줄 것이다.
The meaning of "Gari Jabi" is worshiping a god as own need among many gods. This is a term used in North Korea for worshiping gods or idles. Creation is making something out of nothing. In fact, composition is created with the melodies hiding and unexpressed in the mind of composer. I think composition is making something out of something. Since I was asked to compose, I was wrestling with rhythms and ideas. In the midst of the process, I thought of a melody of Haegum improvisation "Hutton Taryeong". "Hutton Taryeong" is a melody that performer improvises that is played with, and it is used for Shamanism, Buddhist music, and mask dance. To taste Hutton melody should hold the rhythm. The Double bass will do the role. To taste Hutton melody : literally meaning 'scattered melodies' and is a style of traditional Korean music, it can be excitable with the holding rhythm
