이 작품은 1983년에 구상되고 1984년 말에 완성되었으며, 1991년 6월 23일 서울 심포니 오케스트라 제30회 정기연주회에서 소련 출신 지휘자 Roman Kofman의 지휘로 예술의 전당 콘서트홀에서 초연되었다.이 작품은 크게 2개의 부분(Section)으로 구분되는데 첫 번째 부분은 한 민족의 역사와 함께 변모한 남한강의 주변모습을 그리면서 민족의 정서와 한을 나타내고 있고, 두 번째 부분은 한국 현대사에 있어서 잊을 수 없는 큰 슬픔의 시간을 표현하고 있다.
This work was conceived in 1983 and completed in late 1984. The work was performed first by conductor Roman Kofman from the T.S.S.R at the Concert Hall, Seoul Arts Center on June 23, 1991, when the 30th regular concert of Seoul Symphony Orchestra was held.The work is divided into two sections. The Korean emotion and resentment and the supportive appearance of Namhan River transfigured with the history of Korea are expressed in the first section. In the second section, an unforgettable, lamentable period in the present history of Korea is revealed.
