오묘한 선인(仙人)의 미소와 꼭 닮은 악기 향비파. 명주로 만든 현을 사용하는 향비파는 철로 만든 현을 사용하는 중국의 비파와 완전히 다른 음색을 지니고 있다. 향비파는 고구려의 현악기 중 하나로 고구려와 관련한 여러 기록과 벽화에 등장한다. 광복 이후 잠시 그 명맥이 끊어진 적도 있으나, 향비파는 여전히 연주되고 있는 우리의 대표적인 전통악기이다. 이런 향비파이기에 오묘한 선인의 미소를 표현 할 수 있을 것 같았다. 마치 나 자신이 학을 타고 나는 선인이 되어 이야기를 들려주는 듯 각박한 현실에서 한 걸음 쉬어갈 수 있는 편안함으로 다가가고 싶다. 작품의 내용은 유운의 형성 - 천(天)계 - 현(現)계 - 선인의 독백 - 다시 천계로 전개된다. 전반적인 곡구성을 대위적인 진행과 화성적인 진행을 기반으로 다양한 음악적 구사를 발현하고자 하였다.
작품해설(영문)
'Having a striking resemblance to the mysterious smile of a sage, the hyang-bipa uses strings made of silk and thus produces completely different sound from its metal-stringed Chinese counterpart. One of the string instruments used widely in the Goguryeo Dynasty, the hyang-bipa is often mentioned in records of the period and appears in Goguryeo murals. Although the instrument briefly fell into disuse after the 1945 liberation, the hyang-bipa remains one of the essential musical instruments in Korea’s traditional music. After understanding the history of the hyang-bipa, I felt more strongly that it was the perfect instrument to express the mysterious smile of a sage. As if I had become the sage on the back of a crane who sends a message of solace, I wanted my music to send a breath of fresh air for people who are enduring a hectic modern life. The music begins with the “Forming Clouds” and moves onto “Heaven” and then to “Earth”, circling back to “Heaven” after a “Monologue by the Sage.” The score employs a rich variety of musical expressions created by both counterpoint and harmonic progressions.
