혹자는 우리 민족의 대표정서가 ‘한(恨)’이라고 말한다. 외세의 민족말살 정책으로 세뇌되어진 그 “한(恨)”이 지금도 우리를 속박하고 있는 것이다. 단군조선과 환웅의 배달국 시절 우리는 패권주의가 아닌 홍익인간의 이념으로 대륙을 다스렸던 웅혼한 기상을 가진 민족이었다. 근세에 침략과 수탈을 당하면서도 그 “한”을 “해학”으로 승화시켜서 풀었다. 판소리나 탈춤 등 중요한 국악을 조금만 들여다보아도 내용이 “한”이더라도 언제나 “해학”을 바탕으로 풀어간다는 것을 알 수 있다. <북 협주곡 “해학”>은 이러한 생각들에서 나온 작품이다.
북은 전통의 장단을 끊임없이 변주하였고, 관현악의 선율은 5음계를 사용한 전통 가락의 틀 속에서 만들었으며 여기에 <5도화성론>을 사용하여 “체계적인 화성적 국악”을 만든 것이다. 또한 관현악의 다양한 기술을 사용하여 국악의 관현악적인 다양성을 시도해 보았다.
작품해설(영문)
Some say that “han” (meaning “a mix of sorrow and regret”) is the defining emotional sentiment of the Korean people. In some sense, we are still held back by the sorrow and regret in our collective memory from the recent past during which we suffered great oppression by foreign occupiers. We are, however, also the descendants of Hwanwoong and Dangun whose reign spanned a vast continent with their bold and daring spirit and “for the good of humanity.” Even in the recent past during which we suffered repeated invasions and exploits by foreign forces, Koreans were strong and resilient enough to take their sorrows and regrets and process them with “haehak” (meaning “humor”). A light foray into major gugak performances such as pansori or mask dance makes it clear that Koreans never fail to transcend their sorrows and regrets with humor. I drew creative inspiration for “‘SCHERZO’ for Buk and Korean Traditional Orchestra” from such observations. In this concerto, percussions create constant variations of our traditional rhythms, while the melodies for the orchestral performance progress on the traditional pentatonic scale, with the V-chord harmony adding the final touch to create a “systematic and harmonic gugak.” A rich variety of orchestral techniques were also employed to explore the possibilities of gugak in the context of orchestra.
