Two six-note scales, sharing no common tones, are developed by the harp and piano. These scales unfold themselves either juxtaposing one another like a monologue, or superposing one upon the other like a waterfall, creating a harmonic texture within a dissonant context.
'Auto-portrait'is a portrait of myself born under the astrological sign of Gemini. I've always had two contrasting idiosyncrasies residing within myself, at times conflicting against each other and other times collaborating in harmony. I attempted to describe my own relection on the mirror as well as my inner spirituality through introspection. Commissioned by my two daughters, the piece was written in Paris in 1990 and was premiered by my daughters in Seoul the following year.
