Commissioned by Jeongja Kim for her 1972 recital, this is a well-structured and logically convincing work in which composer ByeongDong Paik's interest in "the living notes and lines" is clearly portrayed through Gayageum music. It is Paik's first composition for solo Gayageum.
In this one-movement piece, with structure a-b-a'c-a, the instrument is tuned in the style of Gayageum sanjo. Part a has an introduction consisting of 3/♩ - 4/♩ - 5/♩ - 6/♩ - 7/♩ leading to a very slow section of 3/♩, followed by a contrasting section in a faster tempo, with ornamental notes and dynamics, Section(B) is moerato, allegro in 5/♩, and consistently uses notes divided into 4s, 5s and 6s. The vibration is gradually reduced, while the left hand plays a melody contrasting with the right-hand part, showcasing Paik's characteristic use of a lyrical atmosphere. Section a' is largo in 3/♩, which is simpler and more peaceful in terms of rhythm and ornament, as compared to section a. Part c is adagio in 12/♪, which has a totally different feeling in ryhthmic patterns and technique. Parts a' and a are designed to reflect one another, as if in a mirror.
At first glance, this pice seems to display great freedom in melody and form. However, closer analysis reveals a much thought-out form and logic.
