가야금을 위한 명(冥)은 1975년 이재숙 가야금 독주회 위촉 작품이다.
작곡자는 동양적인 명상의 세계를 서양적인 기법을 빌어 그려본 것으로, 2성부와 3성부의 폴리포닉한 방법으로 전통음악의 세계르 표현했다고 한다.
전체적으로 자유롭고 즉흥적인 요소가 많고 복잡한 리듬의 곡으로, D음을 위한 세 개의 소품과 같은 3악장의 구성으로 되어 있다.
Ⅰ악장은 불규칙하면서도 대조되는 리듬의 마찰로 독특한 음향을 내며 강약의 변화가 많다.
Ⅱ악장은 넓은 음정의 트레몰로와 엑센트가 이루어지는 폴리포니가 특징이다. Ⅲ악장은 순차적인 리듬의 변화와 반음계 선율진행으로 이 곡의 클라이맥스에 해당한다.
이 곡에서는 몇 가지 흥미로운 규칙들이 발견된다. 마디수가 악장마다 10마디씩줄어들면서 Ⅰ악장은 40마디, Ⅱ악장은 30마디, Ⅲ악장은 20마디로 되어 있고, 박자는 마디수와 반대로 악장마다 늘어나면서 Ⅰ악장은 3/♩, Ⅱ악장은 5/♩, Ⅲ악장은 7/♩이다. 또한 악장 간에 시작음과 종지음이 유기적으로 진행되는데, Ⅰ악장은 9현의 높은 D에서 시작하여 4현의 중간 D로 끝나고, Ⅱ악장은 4현의 중간 D로 시작하여 1현의 낮은 D로 끝나며, Ⅲ악장은 1현의 낮은 D로 시작하여 낮은 D로 끝난다.

Myeong for solo Gayageum was commissioned for ChaeSuk Lee's 1975 Gayageum recital. It portrays the meditative oriental spirit, using Western compositional technique. Two and three parts are treated polyphonically to express the world of Korean traditional music.
Overall, the work is rich with formal freedom and improvisations, as well as complexity of rhythm, in three movements which sound like three separate works in D. The first movement features intersting sound effects through irregular rhythmic friction and changeable dynamics. The second movement displays a polyphonic treatment of tremolo with wide intervals and strong accents . And the third movement is the climax, with sequential rhythmic change and microtonal progressions.
The piece showcases some interesting features. Each successive movement has 10 fewer than the preceding one: 40 measures in the first, 30 in the second, and 20 in the third movement. On the other hand, the number of beats increases as the piece progresses: the first movements is in 3/♩, the second in 5/♩, and the third in 7/♩. The first and last notes of the movements are also organically related. The first movement begins on the high D of the ninth string and ends on middle D on string 4. The second movement begins on middle D on string 4 and ends with low D on the first string. And the last movement begins and ends on the low D on string 1.
