Originally composed at the suggestion of the pianist Suh Su-jeong, this work was revised for the cembalist Michiyo Honma.
Ⅰ.Mäßig, ziemlich fließend
The consistently sustained pitch line (A♭) goes with the counter voices below, 'as if to stay, but actually not, and varying actively.'
Ⅱ. Lebhaft
This piece is structured by the 'motivische Arbeit', in the invention style.
Intermezzo
The player is instructed to improvise this section using given pitch materials of three groups. The instrumentalist is required, for example, to improvise differently for each group, and to make the intermezzo an introductory part to the next piece, and not to overextend, even though there is no time limit.
Ⅲ. Sehr ruhig
'Recitation like a monologue of a poet' rather than a song, and 'piano, which induces the poem's intonation and energy. also participating in that' - these are the framework of this piece. The poet, who monologizes a sense of vanity, while staying at the pitch D, then exclaims on the wide laeps of intervals, and finally returns to A♭ (the remotest - or maybe the closest - tone from D).
