Originally composed for a solo violin as the designated repertoire for violin for violin section of Dong-a International music competition in 1997, this “Passacaglia”(theme with 17 variations and coda) is newly arranged for string orchestra by composer Sangjik jeon.
Different from passacaglia in a classical sense, this piece is a sort of characteristic variation which transforms the theme in diverse ways. Horizontal and vertical extension of intervals, which is the feature of the theme, is characteristically developed in the whole piece.
